oxblogger spot on, this. I feel it’s been pretty much like this forever. Even in the 80s the chanting was more likely to be anti-Swindon than pro-Oxford. I remember writing something years ago, that the club has a core negativity that seeps in to every corner. The depressing stadium doesn’t help, but the mood always feels like ‘go on, impress me’, much like gigs in Oxford too.
And it’s not just the East Stand ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol and Cocaine’ brigade. The SSU is full of the most whingiest old gits, always searching for a crack in the armour of positivity to find something anything wrong.
I don’t know what the answer is but the return/funding of a positive fan group would be a start. We need to learn from Germany where every team gets unswerving support for the entire match regardless of performance or scoreline. The fans are there because they love to be happy, positive, supportive, tribal.
BTW I’m at a festival with a Cov fan and even after scoring 6, it’s not just us who have these types of supporters.
