GF is a non-Exec Chairman. Normally, that role would take up a couple of days per month, with the occasional increase should one be required due to unforeseen factors arising. He is not there to meddle in day-to-day executive tasks. He is actually the conduit between the exec-management and the owners.
The man on the ground is Tim Williams, and as CEO it is he who has overall control on a day-to-day business and it is he who should be carrying the can for the problems we see before us. GF’s job, other than to be in communication with owners and execs, is to provide oversight of the CEO’s ability and progress on meeting the objectives agreed by the Board.
Whether or not Tim Williams is doing that is difficult to understand, as none of us know what those objectives are. Sure, we can guess, but we don’t know.
For my money, Adam Benson and Tim Williams are the issue. They’re both from corporate backgrounds and are seemingly intent on putting as much distance between themselves and the supporters as they can. It’s my contention that they misunderstand how a community-based club works and how closely the supporters feel to it. This attitude oozes from their comms and attitudes.
Might they be the right people to run a successful community based club? Maybe, but I’m not sure they’re the right people to navigate the journey to that destination.
