TrevorAylottsHeadband That said, he does need to learn from mistakes quickly, and there have been learning points from games which don’t seem to have been, er, learnt.
Building on this, and nicking points that @oxblogger and @brinyhoof have already made more succinctly - I do wonder if the City Football Group dogma allows for that.
Does it have “deploying different styles to adapt to different situations” in its ethos (if it does, it’s possible Des was on an outing to the Roman Amphitheatre in Cirencester when they covered that in class).
The CFG approach seems to be founded upon a notion of sticking to your principles, and if you continue to “do things right” you’ll eventually succeed. The big problem there is that it’s an approach conceived by a football manager who has only ever had limitless funds and a large pool of the very best footballers on the planet to execute his vision.
The CFG ethos might not survive or flourish under sustained exposure to the lower leagues and it will be a big test of Des as a manager/coach (and the likes of Manning too) to see whether or not they can recognise that and then have the chops to adapt the approach/chuck it out the window/come up with something completely new when it’s needed.
