Absolutely and fundamentally disagree with Williams’s assertion about what constitutes a goal from a corner, but it’s not a hugely surprising development to see short corners increase, given that - for example - teams are increasingly prefer to take free kicks short, even relatively deep in the opposing half.
Can’t remember which game it was, but we recently scored from a short corner - something we have looked a bazillion miles away from every time we’ve tried it in the preceding a hundred years. The big difference seems to be that once upon a time you tried clever tricks that were over elaborate or poorly practised. This Notts County approach seems to be: we’re naturally good on the ball - let’s give ourselves an opportunity to be naturally good on the ball deep in their half when their defenders are set up for something different and end up flapping. Good shout really, if you have the luxury of the players who can do that kind of shit though (psst… we do too).
